Through It All: How God's Presence Carries You Through Every Season of Life

No matter what you are facing right now, the story of Joseph in Genesis offers one of the most powerful reminders in all of Scripture: God does not leave you when life gets hard. He is with you through every pit, every prison, and every palace.

What Does It Mean to Be Truly Prosperous?

Genesis 39:2 says, "And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and He was in the house of His master the Egyptian." (King James Version)

Joseph was a slave. He had lost his coat of many colors. He had no possessions to speak of. And yet the Bible calls him prosperous.

True prosperity is not about what you own. It is about who is with you. When God's presence is in your life, you are prosperous regardless of your circumstances, your address, or your bank account.

Who Was Joseph and Why Does His Story Matter?

Genesis chapters 37 through 50 give us a detailed picture of Joseph's life. He was one of twelve sons, favored by his Father with a coat of many colors. At just seventeen years old, God gave Him a dream about His future.

That dream was bigger than Joseph. It was bigger than the people around him. And sometimes, the vision God gives you is too large for the people in your current circle to handle.

Do not let small-minded people talk you out of what God has shown you.

What Happens When People Betray You?

Joseph's brothers hated him because of his dream. They threw him into a pit, a cistern that should have had water in it. But God had already arranged the details. The water was not there. The very thing designed to destroy him became the thing that saved him.

When God is with you, He can set up situations to receive you even in places that were meant to harm you.

His brothers then sold him into slavery and lied to their Father, using His coat as false evidence that He was dead. They wanted his story to end there. But you cannot stop what God has ordained.

Can God Still Bless You When You Are in the Wrong Place?

Joseph ended up in Potiphar's house as a slave. And yet Genesis 39:3 says, "And his master saw that the Lord was with Him, and that the Lord made all that He did to prosper in His hand." (King James Version)

You do not have to announce that God is with you. People will see it. God's favor does not always look like what the world calls success, but those around you will notice something different about your life.

Joseph was then falsely accused by Potiphar's wife and thrown into prison. He went from the pit to Potiphar's house to prison. Down, down, down. But God never changed His address. Joseph changed locations, but God's presence followed Him to every single one.

Does God Stay With You Even in Your Lowest Moments?

Genesis 39:21 tells us, "But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave Him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison." (King James Version)

Even in prison, Joseph was put in charge. Even in the lowest place, God's favor was visible. The enemy will try to convince you that if God were really with you, you would never have ended up in the pit, never lost the job, never faced the hardship. But sometimes the very places you end up are proof that God is with you, because most people never make it out of those places at all.

How Does God Use Unexpected People to Open Doors?

While in prison, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh's butler and baker. He asked the butler to remember him when he was restored. And when Pharaoh had a troubling dream that no one could interpret, the butler finally remembered Joseph.

God will give you a referral. He will cause people who do not even like you to open doors for you. He will make people give you a raise, offer you an opportunity, or speak your name in a room you were never supposed to be in. That is not luck. That is the favor of God.

What Does It Look Like When God's Timing Finally Arrives?

Joseph was called out of prison to stand before Pharaoh. He interpreted the dream: seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. His advice was simple. Store up in the good years so you are prepared for the lean ones.

This is a spiritual principle as much as a practical one. Pray when nothing is wrong. Build your faith when things are going well. Store up prayers for the seasons when all you can say is "Jesus." When you have prayers already laid up, they are there when you need them most.

Pharaoh placed Joseph second in command over all of Egypt. He received a new robe, a ring, and authority. He was not even looking for a job. God promoted Him out of a prison cell into a palace.

Why Did Joseph Have to Wait So Long?

Joseph spent years in Egypt before his moment came. He had to learn the language, the customs, and the culture. He had to be prepared for what was coming. If he had arrived too soon, he would not have been ready.

Some seasons you have to stay in until God says you are ready. Arriving too early can lead to arrogance. But when you know it was God who brought you through the pit and the prison, you will not say "look at me." You will say "look at God."

What Happens When the People Who Hurt You Need Your Help?

When famine spread across the land, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy grain. They did not recognize him. But he recognized them. The very people who threw him in a pit now had to bow before him to survive.

And what did Joseph do? He showed them kindness. In Genesis 50, he told them, "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive." (Genesis 50:20 King James Version)

The betrayal was real. But so was the blessing. Without the betrayal, there would have been no Potiphar's house. Without Potiphar's house, there would have been no prison. Without the prison, there would have been no Pharaoh. Every painful step was part of the path.

How Can You Trust God When Life Keeps Going Downhill?

Joseph's journey went down before it went up. Pit. Slavery. Prison. But God was with Him at every level. His presence does not depend on your circumstances. His favor travels with you. His peace, His power, and His protection all come with His presence.

As David wrote, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." (Psalm 23:4 King James Version)

People will leave your side when things get difficult. But God said He will never leave you nor forsake you. That is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

What Does Joseph's Story Tell Us About Divine Timing?

From age seventeen to fifty, Joseph's story unfolded over decades. Some things take time. But every step was ordered. Everything unfolded in divine timing.

Do not stop trusting God because the process is long. Do not stop praising Him because the breakthrough has not come yet. The favor and presence of God are worth more than money, more than the praise of people, and more than any title or position this world can offer.

Life Application

This week, take time to look back over your own life the way Joseph looked back over his. Think about the pits you have been in, the seasons that felt like prison, the moments when everything seemed to be going down. Then ask yourself honestly: was God with you through those times?

Your challenge this week is to write down three specific moments in your life when God showed up for you in a place or situation that should have broken you. Keep that list somewhere visible. When doubt creeps in or a new difficulty arises, go back to that list and remind yourself that the same God who was with you then is with you now.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

• Are there people or situations I have been blaming for my hardship that God may have actually used to position me for something greater?

• Am I trusting God's timing, or am I trying to force my way out of a season He has not finished using yet?

• Is there someone who has wronged me that I need to release, knowing that what they meant for harm, God intended for good?

• Am I building my faith and prayer life now, in the good seasons, so that I am prepared for the difficult ones ahead?

God was with Joseph in the pit, in the palace, and everywhere in between. He is with you too. Through it all.
